Below are some comments from readers in various novel writing workshops and elsewhere I collected during the several years I was working on the Beginner's Luke Series–for which I received a contract offer from a well-known NY publisher that I ultimately declined in favor of an experiment in self-publishing. These are real quotes from real people, though the names have been changed to protect the guilty. Starting this summer, I've decided to give away the first 2012 copies of Beginner's Luke. "Having read every last word of Beginner's Luke, many twice, I echo the words of Emerson to Whitman: I greet you at the beginning of a great career!" Malcolm
"Beginner's Luke is like having one shot too many. But in a good way. This novel has so many strengths, in little details and in whole paragraphs. Very strong work!" Raquel
"Reading Beginner's Luke is like watching an episode of Twilight Zone, only to discover you're actually on the other side of the screen. Plainly put, I loved this novel." Wendy
"I've had quite a journey ever since you shared Beginner's Luke with me. I'm more careful, these days, when someone gives me a book. I haven't been the same since reading it, as if I contracted the disease of restlessness and have spent months reconsidering every facet of my life. Your novel changed me forever and I blame you for it." Iris
"Goddamn you, your writing is amazing!" Ben
"I wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed your book, Beginner's Luke. It delights me to see such passion in a work of art. I've thought quite often of Luke Soloman. His is kind of a coming-of-age tale and mid-life-crisis manual rolled into one. Luke's wit combined with his vulnerability make him a very sympathetic character. I think you're really on to something." Kathy
"I thoroughly enjoyed your amazingly unique novel, the world and words of which pleasantly obliterated the dreadful quotidia of my train ride home last weekend." Christopher
"Beginner's Luke is a brain-injected picaresque hypodermic needle. It's probably the most original novel I've ever read. The biggest problem I have is saying something bad about it." Eric
"I'm very impressed by your book. And jealous." Nancy
"Outstanding, wonderful storytelling--funny, true, witty and full of just the right combination of angst and fantasy." Jeremy
"I wouldn't change a word if I were you. As a reader I'm all yours, anxiously waiting for the next novel in the series, ready to turn the page and continue the Adventure." Douglas
